BT BT is at the heart of an escalating communications industry providing an unmatched service. Rich in communications and information, BT helps individuals, families, communities, businesses and organisations to interact, learn and flourish to the full. We believe that using telecommunications to enable a community to share information and knowledge is fundamental. The Wedmore trial has been sponsored on the basis of enabling local citizens to have access to the new wave technologies. We are delighted that the information centre has been so successful. BTs Community Partnership Programme (CPP) is the current Business in the Community Company of the Year winning this award for its overall Impact on Society (presented by the Prime Minister in July 1999). In recent months a range of surveys have showed that BTs standing on community and social responsibility is consistently high and that our community investment programme is amongst the best regarded in the UK. Every year, BT invests £16m in the community. It is a case that if BTs community programme were a charity, its size would place it amongst the UKs top 30. At BT we believe it is important therefore to deliver a correspondingly substantial social impact and make a real difference in the community. The past financial year has seen rapid change in the communications industry around the world, presenting BT with many outstanding opportunities and challenges. These opportunities have arisen from the remarkable pace of development in new-wave areas such as the Internet, data and mobile services.

Concert, the global venture with AT&T and the company's alliance with Japan Telecom going from strength from strength shows BT is operating among the worldwide market.
